Miscellaneous Ramblings & News

Made it through July! Halfway through the quiet summer months already. I'm not writing from the local park either. I've successfully found a new place to live and managed to move everything. It's the first time since I moved to England last November that lots of stuff has seen the light the day! As with June, July's been a pretty quiet month. I've been packing, moving, unpacking, and on vacation. Eggs has been rather busy as well, running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Bronxx needs to be rescued from the evil bank; they never seem to let him go home.

I've almost come to a decision about what we're going to do with the Chaos categories. You're still welcome to contribute your thoughts, if you haven't already done so, by visiting http://www.eingang.org/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?29/80

We're still having a problem accessing the game bots that run on Starlink. Last month I connected via ftp (which still works) and manually cleaned out the scores file and added a some stuff to the automatic monthly script that resets them now for us. I also tried to install our new utility that generates our nicely formatted monthly scores for the Gazette but it doesn't seem to work there and without direct access, it's difficult to find out why. The admin of the machine is also waiting for access through the firewall. What this means is that if the bots die for some reason and don't auto-restart themselves, I can't connect to do it for them.

Playing in Risky Business was definitely down in July on DALnet, at least in terms of number of different players. June (stats were just posted. I appear to have forgotten to post them last month) saw more than 400 "different" people playing but only 200-some in July. Number one visitor in July was a newcomer, Kambei, coming in at 9800-some visits. June's top visitor was `Kelleigh again. She must have been preoccupied in July. (: On Starlink, the number one visitor for the month of July was dimski with 7968 appearances.

In closing for this month, you might want to check out my personal site if you've been following the adventures of S & M in England. I'm shortly posting two brand new adventures from Stephen! You'll find those at www.eingang.org under S & M.

Game Bot Development

No news is not good news. I didn't have any time again this month to do any bot development at all although I have a huge list of things to do.

Tip of the Month

Think you know all the answers for Chaos (all 45,000+ of them)? Why not take the time to write some new categories to be shared with the other players. It's your chance for fame, fortune, and immortality! Our Web site makes it easy by providing a form which guides you through the category creation process and submits the category for you. When your category has been processed by our category editing team, you'll receive an e-mail telling you what's happened. Why not try your hand at it today? Visit our Chaos submission form today!

Category News

I'm running a little behind in processing Chaos categories. The oldest categories left unprocessed in my file is May 30th, giving me about 102 currently unprocessed entries. I'm working on it!

Category Submission Winners

65 new categories submitted to Chaos in July. The number one submitter was Reebs with 28 new categories. 2nd place was MAHAL`KITA with 13, followed by Cubamania with 8. Thanks a lot, people! Keep up the good work!

RB saw four new categories submitted in Jane Ward's continuing alphabetical seriest. Thanks to all the category writers! Will the top category submitter for Chaos or RB be you next month?

Your Game Administrators & Channel Ops

No new channel operators this month although we did have a few applications.

If you know anyone who might make a good channel operator for one of our games, encourage them to apply. You can apply via an instantly marked application form on the Games Web Site at http://games.eingang.org/Information/operators.html.

Finally, did you know that there's a list of channel operators on our Web site? You can find it at http://games.eingang.org/Information/operatorslist.html. If you're an active operator and your name isn't listed, send some mail to eingang@eingang.org.

Rumours

I've heard a rumour of a few things concerning Chaos in the last month. First, that we're going to get a large number of new categories added to the game (more than 100 new categories) shortly. Secondly, I've also heard that another Chaos tournament is probably in the works for mid-September. It's likely to be modelled along the lines of the last one, a set number of teams will be allowed to register and they'll be played off against each other. Keep your eyes open on the web site www.eingang.org for the latest information.
